Social Media Research

As part of our social media research we researched individual artists that have a substantial social media following. We then compared each artist and what sort of content their accounts consist of.
We found that Drake has one of the largest social media followings for an individual artist. His social media consists of him at various events, his merchandise and his photos from his concerts and tours. this therefore represents his tour and merchandise and further promotes and markets his tour and merchandise.

Stormzy has a similar social media approach with his account consisting of various images of himself, tour information, collaborations and album covers. This also promotes his image, album and upcoming music.

Finally the Weeknd is an artist with a very large following but as a retro style artist he publishes his personal image and therefore genre of music along side his tour information. This approach unlike Stormzy or Drake creates a understanding of his image and genre in addition to advertising his music.

Travis Scott - Biebs In Trap

The music video starts of with an awesome shot from beneath the artists, I think that the camera is looking through a glass floor, but it makes this effect that the artist is practically flying. The video then includes an alternative location with a group of woman that are sexualised for the attention of the audience. At the part of the song where it says 'that coca' which is referring to cocaine, there is a shot of Travis Scott the main performer kicking a white substance. The video gradually becomes more and more confusing and trippy as the lights flash repetitively. It continuous in this way throughout the rest of the song. In direct referral to the lyrcis, it is clear that this song is completely drug related which is why it can be considered a good comparison to our video. I would strive for our video to use similar trippy and unique shots to make our video stand out from others.

The Hills - The Weekend

The video starts of as a narrative, in which the main performer has been in a bad car crash and leaves the car looking injured and in shock, he then proceeds to help the other people who were involved with the accident. The artist then starts to lip sync the music whilst also staying in role, for example, the women who were there with him start to take out their aggression on him, and as they walk away the car is perceived to explode in the background. Overall I would say the video is quite a boring and insignificant one, but it does suit the music very well with its monotone aurora. The lyrics also fit the video very well as it portrays the life of someone who is literally 'fucked' up.

Audience

How do you consume music?
When? Do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?

I am always listening to music whether its travelling, working or during sport. I have a couple music playlists that I alternate how much I listen to between what I am doing. For example when at the gym I listen to more grim/hip-hop but when with friends I listen to a wider range of music.

Gigs, Car, School?
I prefer to go to music festivals like V vest, this is because I prefer the environment and the music always comes across better when its live and louder. During the car and travelling I have to be listening to music as it allows me to relax and concentrate when by myself. Finally when at school and doing work in art I will always listen to music so that I am focused.

How?
radio, computer, ipod, tv, live, dancing, homework, getting ready ie doing other things - background wallpaper
The only way I usually listen to music is on my phone through apple music as I am able to hold as much music as I like and it is accessible without internet. However when at home I sometimes use youtube to listen to music as it is easily accessible.

Why?
What are the pleasures associated with music consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?

I believe music just offers its audience to relax and be themselves when listening to music either by themselves or with friends. It also creates a common ground between people.

No rest - Dry The River.

What are the emotions it stirs?

This song gave me more negative emotions due to the slow pace of the tune and sorrowful voice of the many artist, although it did pick up speed at various points I would still revolve this song around sad emotions types.

How do you picture the music video?

-Possibly the northern lights in the background going at their usual pace in the night sky. Whilst at the same time the main singing artist of the band is in the picture with the northern lights behind him and the only equipment on screen is a stand mic.

-However at the particular points in the song when the music picks up speed and the singer sounds more passionate, the northern lights could become faster(almost like a time-lapse) in accordance with the tempo of this music. There is a part of the song where the instruments in the background begin to be heard, and at this point there can be a jump cut to the rest of the band appearing behind the singer; in the usual band formation.

Andrew Goodwin

We was also set the task of researching Andrew Goodwins music video theory and how he believes a video can either amplify or contrast the lyrics of the song.

Firstly Goodwins theory develops the relationship between lyrics and visuals. This theory sees Goodwin believe that a music video will either amplify or contrast the songs lyrics, for example Goodwin develops his theory with 'thought beats', this is where the beat can be amplified by the video cutting of the music video.

As well as this Goodwin suggests that every music video has a trend or a pattern, this includes whether the music video has a continuous aspect that can be related to the artists style of music.

Goodwin also believes that voyeurism is part of most music videos, this includes sexualising artists or people in the video, for example close up body shots of a females body and not her face is sexualising her image.

Carol Vernallis

Our task for today was to research the Carol Vernallis music video theory whilst exploring each aspect of the theory.
